Beat on Down the Line
Omission of this song on the official Download Series, V. 3, seems to be due to the dropouts on the Internet Archives version. Seems to be derived from cotsman's SBD, although the first reviewer seems to be privy to material unavailable to the rest of us. There are two large dropouts in BIODTL.

Modern Trader
This early Keith show was just an entry in DeadBase until the archive age - which is odd, because it was radio broadcast but apparently never entered trading circles. There is some great material in the show - like all of this woodshedded-for-Keith tour. The University of Rochester gym sat 2000, so, small campus show. Skull Fuck was being released and shipped this week so the ticketees would not have heard many of these songs yet. It's one of those lopsided '71s, with a nearly 2hr first set and a 1hr second set. The official release sounds better overall, but cuts half the tunings and banter. Both the SBD and official release have wow & flutter and pitch errors. There was a bad connection somewhere in the line, with buzzing and drops. The speed wobbles and pitch could have been fixed but it seems they didn't want to invest too much time in the Download Series (this can be fixed today, though the vox-heavy mix can not). Too bad; with some work this is a better show - in fact as good or better than 10/21.
First Set. Bertha might have been better in person; it's hard to tell from the iffy, wobbly recording (albeit the monitors weren't set yet). They're starting to warm by Playin'. It's not the best, but, can't really go wrong with a '71 PitB eh? By Me & My Uncle, the band is taking off, and it's one of those '71 weavers. Tennessee is the 5th one - not as big as 10/21, but good. Jack Straw is a full version with the corners attended. '71 is a big year for RxR, and, of course, for Bobby McGee. The next couple are back to average but Mexicali is one of those times where Jer just starts spraying everywhere. Loser-SS is a bit rough, followed by a brief Spring Song tuning. After a Beat it on Down the Line-5, Jer throws fills all over El Paso. Comes a Time is pretty good for being the 4th one, and One More Saturday Night-R1 is an incredible version - one of the best of '71.
Second Set. Ramble isn't the slickest but Jer does throw in a little solo after the first verse on these early ones. The rest of the set is kush on a tray. A fun ride of a Mags to a solid Truckin'. Jer is really good here, however there's an odd edit in the latter on Download 3: @7:57 (8:03 on SBD) 19sec are cut. Even Drums is better than most '71s (1min cut @1:28 on the SBD). This is a very "played" The Other One; then it goes out like a '72. This is maybe better than even 10/22. There's no encore, just a great JBG. The Berries always gave Keith a chance to barrelhouse and this one was consistent in late '71.
1st Set: B
2nd Set: B+
Overall = 4¼ stars
Highlights:
Me & My Uncle - a '71 weaver
Jack Straw - corners attended
Big Railroad Blues - late '71 is a great era for these
Me & Bobby McGee - peaking
El Paso - Jer throws fills all over
One More Saturday Night - candidate for best of '71
Sugar Magnolia - fun ride
Truckin' - Jer great here
The Other One - may be tour best
SOURCES: The cotsman_9761 has it all save a segment of Drums. Download 3 has all but BioDtL (who knows why) and a segment of Truckin' (easily patched). Both have wow & flutter and pitch errors. The SBD is better-pitched in the 1st set than the official release, however Tennessee Jed runs 1.5% fast and Playin', Sugaree and M&MU are a tad slow. On the official release, the first set runs an additional 0.5-1% faster, with Tennessee pitched 2% too fast. The second set on the official runs 1% too fast, except for Ramble, which is pitched 1.5% too fast.

Download Series #3 -
This show is weird - every song crisply, sparklingly played in the first set - Comes a Time is a highlight for me. Anyone know why the Download Series didn't include BIODTL? I haven't heard this particular board but wonder, since it seems to be on the setlist.
Set 2 is a strangely abrupt but awesomely powerful grenade of a show - maybe they were cut off due to curfew or some such thing.
Is Download Series #3 worth purchasing? I did, and at $13 it's a little steep I think for such an aborted second set, even though I have to admit it is very, very exciting and the sound is crystal clear. It's nice to give back to the band every once in a while. At least with many of the Download releases they didn't chop up the sets too much ala Road Trips.
